CfTracker 1.7 is now available with the following changes:

  • Applications and sessions have been split into two pages.
  • Sessions can now be “stopped” instead of trying to force expiration (much better approach).
  • You can perform a stop or refresh on multiple sessions by their client IP (further properties to be added soon).
  • Tooltips that try to explain the various buttons and table headers (will provide option to disable in the next version).
  • New logo! As seen above.
  • Addition information in the footers.  Added links to CfTrackers various resources (github, my blog, riaforge, uservoice).

CF: SessionStop(), ending a CF session

I’ve seen quite a few approaches taken to end a session in Coldfusion (note: we’re not going to talk about j2eeSessions).  They range from deleting cookies, clearing out the session scope, setting the session timeout to 1 second or a combination of them.  While they can be affective they all have certain disadvantages.

I’ve discovered another way to stop a session completely, without using any of the previously mentioned methods.  I’ll start off by showing you the current ways that I’m aware of and explaining the disadvantages they can have and then show my new approach.

Well it didn’t take me long.  I rush out a release of CFTracker with it’s new CFIDE Administrator extension and then I go and discover some nifty additions.  So I had to release a new version.

Changes:

  • Refresh application and session “last accessed” times to keep them alive for longer.
  • Flag applications as uninitialised, which causes onApplicationStart to execute on the next new request.
  • Extra information for applications:
    • Initialised, shows if onApplicationStart needs executing.
  • View Application settings and events (like doing a CFDump of “this” inside an application.cfc.
  • Extra session information:
    • ID from URL shows if the CFID and CFToken were set by a URL instead of being generated.
    • Client IP, address that the session was created by.
  • New Server Status page!
    • Jrun memory information.
    • Uptime.
    • Performance monitor stats.
  • Fixed some bugs with expired sessions / applications.

CFTracker: CFIDE Admin extension

I’m pretty excited about this post and it’s all the fault of Adobe’s Claude Englebert.  When I attended his presentation on CF9′s Server Manager at SOTR2010, he briefly mentioned that you can add your own extensions to the CFIDE Administrator.  This was a small but powerful fact that I hadn’t taken notice of before and he got part of my brain ticking over on what I could possibly do with that fact.

Certain ColdFusion applications are written in such a way that after the session times out, the user is also logged out.  This is sometimes to secure the application from others accessing the computer, while the real user is away from their desk.  If this is the case, it’s nice to let the user know how long they’ve got left before they’re logged out due to inactivity.
